George P. Schermerhorn

George P. Schermerhorn, 94, of Moline, Illinois, well-known insurance agent, died Monday, November 27, 2017, in Illini Restorative Care, Silvis, Illinois

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in the Horizon Room at Trimble Funeral Home at Trimble Pointe, 701 12th Street, Moline, with The Rev. James Benson officiating. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a Masonic service at 5:30 p.m. Friday with Doric Lodge #319, AF & AM, presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriners Children's Hospitals.

George Putnam Schermerhorn was born September 11, 1923, in on his family's farm in Chatfield, Minnesota, to Freeman and Eva Williams Schermerhorn. He served in the U. S. Army in France during WW II. He married Alice Shafer on July 18, 1947, in East Moline. She died October 15, 1982. He married Carol Kennedy Forsyth on April 17, 1984, in Cancun, Mexico. She died October 23, 2012. He was the owner of George P. Schermerhorn Insurance, a State Farm agency, for over 30 years, retiring in 1985. He previously worked for the East Moline Post Office and Prudential Insurance. He was a member of Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Rock Island; Doric Lodge #319, AF & AM, Moline; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Moline; Kaaba Shrine Temple and Moline American Legion Post #246. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, and enjoyed golfing, traveling, and wintering in Arizona.

George is survived by his sister, Mary Carson of Moline; many nieces and nephews and their families; and step-daughters, Kathleen Reimers and her husband Jack of Moline, and Jeannine Forsyth of Bettendorf, Iowa, and their families. He was preceded in death by his wives, a daughter, Mary Melissa Howe of Boulder, Colorado, and siblings, Glenn Schermerhorn, Helen Lundquist, Dorothy Ferrier, and Steven Schermerhorn.
