Frank A. Ghys, Jr., 74, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Trinity Moline, Moline, Illinois.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John?s Lutheran Church, Rock Island, with The Reverend Stacie Fidlar officiating. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, where Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. Memorials may be made to the church.
Frank was born March 11, 1939, in Rock Island, the son of Frank Alphonse Sr. and Ruth Thompson Ghys. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps, and married Delores VanLaningham DeMay on March 28, 1981, in Rock Island. He was employed in heat treat at the former International Harvester Farmall Works, Rock Island, retiring in 1992, He then worked for Bill Hurst at his shop in Milan, Illinois.
Frank was an active and long-time member of St. John?s Lutheran Church, and a member of Oakwood County Club, Orion Lions Club, and Rock Island Moose Lodge. He was an avid sports fan, loved golf, and enjoyed watching his grandson race stock cars.
Frank is survived by his wife, Delores; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Ray Guss Sr. of Calhoun, Georgia, and Betty and Dick Welsh of Colona, Illinois; two grandchildren and their spouses, Ray Jr. and Julie Guss and Debra and Jim Smith; three great-grandsons, Jason, Evan, and Adam Guss; a brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Helen Ghys of Davenport, Iowa; sisters, Roberta Hall of Silvis, Illinois, and Janet Ledbetter of Rock Island; and three adopted children from a previous marriage. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Dorothy and Pauline.
