George F. Burns, 78, of Moline, Illinois, died Saturday, October 17, 2009, at Trinity Medical Center West, Rock Island, Illinois.
Visitation is Tuesday, October 20, 2009, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, 1700 First Street, Coal Valley, Illinois. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at Edgewood Baptist Church, 2704 38th Street, Rock Island, Illinois, with The Reverend Mel Brown officiating. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery on Arsenal Island, Rock Island, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Edgewood Baptist Church.
George Frederick Burns was born March 11, 1931, in Kewanee, Illinois, to Lawrence and Irene (Lohse) Burns. He graduated from Kewanee High School and served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He married Barbara Ravenscroft on October 28, 1955. George retired from John Deere Plow Planter in 1987 working the majority of the time in the foundry. He also retired from Trinity Medical Center where he worked in Housekeeping, and was also employed as custodian at the Edgewood Baptist Church. However, his favorite job was delivering flowers for Staack Florist. He very much enjoyed working in his yard and around his home and especially loved his family.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Steve Shanahan of Anaheim, California, Lisa and Randy Matya of Taylor Ridge, Illinois, and Michele and Dennis Cato of Moline; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Julie Burns of Moline, and Christopher and Kelly Burns of Spring Lake, Michigan; eight grandchildren; and one brother, George Earl Himes and his wife Shirley of Kettering, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and three brothers.
