Doris J. Higgins

Aledo, Illinois Doris J. Higgins, 81, of Aledo died Sunday, July 8, 2001 at the Mercer County Hospital, Aledo. Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Peniel Cemetery, Joy. Memorials may be made to the Mercer County Historical Society or Serenity Hospice. Trimble Funeral Home, Aledo is in charge of arrangements. Doris was born on May 20, 1919 in rural Alexis, Illinois to Frank and Annie L. (Willet) Kenney. She married Charles E. Higgins on May 19, 1936 in Freeport, Illinois. He preceded her in death on October 31, 1987. Doris farmed with her husband in Millersburg Township and during World War II had worked in an aircraft manufacturing plant. Doris enjoyed traveling, bowling, card club and bingo. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed visiting, especially with children. She had been a member of the former Joy Presbyterian Church and attended United Presbyterian Church, Aledo. Doris is survived by 3 sons and a daughter-in-law; Roger E. and Marilyn Higgins of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; David A. Higgins of Joy; P. Douglas Higgins of Geneseo; daughter-in-law, Sandra Higgins of Joy and son-in-law, Jim Brokaw of Joy; 8 grandchildren: Lisa Charlwood, Sherie Zoss, Kyle Higgins, Ryan Higgins, Adam Higgins, Travis Brokaw, Jeremy Higgins and Signe Higgins; 9 great grandchildren; and 2 sisters; Jeanne Stone of Aledo and Shirley & Bill Morrow of Joy. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 2 sons, Danny and Dale; a daughter, Dereth M. Brokaw and and infant brother. END OF OBITUARY
