Della Josephine Mitchell, 88, formerly of Moline, Illinois, died, April 28, 2005 at The Heights of Summerlin Care Center, Las Vegas, Nevada.
Services are 11:30 A.M., Wednesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois. Memorials may be given to either the First Congregation Church, Moline or to the American Cancer Society.
Della Josephine Mitchell was born July 31, 1916 in Uhrichsville, Ohio, the daughter of Alex and Ruth (Barkley) Mitchell. She graduated from the former Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Davenport, Iowa. During World War II, First Lieutenant Mitchell served as a Nurse Anesthetist in the Army Nurse Corps, having served in Germany and France. Della was employed for over 35 years as a nurse for Dr. Carl T. Johnson, retiring in 1982 and had previously been a surgical nurse at Mercy Hospital in Davenport. After retiring from nursing, Della volunteered her abilities at the former Moline Public Hospital. Della had been a 50-year member of the First Congregational Church, Moline, and the Mary Martha Guild, and was a former member of the American Nurses Association. Della enjoyed spending her time, reading, swimming, walking, and playing bridge.
Survivors for Della include a niece, Mary Jo Gray, Las Vegas, Nevada, four great-nieces and nephews, along with ten great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Mitchell, a brother, Robert Mitchell, and a niece Lois Ann Greenway.
