Daniel A. Smith, 74, of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Wednesday, June 26, 2013, in Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa, surrounded by his family.
Services are 10:00 a.m. Saturday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. Burial is in Rock Island Memorial Park. Visitation is 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to the family.
Dan was born May 20, 1939, in Milan, Illinois, the son of Arthur and Dorothy (Mosher) Smith. He married Lola Glenn on November 4 ,1963, in Rock Island, Illinois. She died October 18, 2004.
He worked for the Laborers? Local Union 309, retiring in 1995. He enjoyed being outdoors, including gardening, fishing, camping, and sitting on his porch swing. He was a regular at Hardee?s, Rudy?s, and the Maid-Rite, and was a fan of baseball, NASCAR, and the Dallas Cowboys. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dan is survived by his children, Liz Zeroth of Moline, Dusty and Lori Mabie of Coal Valley, and Bonnie and Kriss Kent of Coal Valley; grandchildren, Trisha Zeroth and Ron Lawson of Preemption, Illinois, Cherree Long of Coal Valley, and Jennifer Kent and Ryan Whitmire of Coal Valley; great-grandchildren, Nicole, Cayla, Lincoln, Braxton, Hayleigh, and Rylynn; sisters, Joyce, Sue, and Alberta; brothers, Jack, John, and Jim; and Gary Eugene Johnson, who was like a son to Dan. He was preceded in death by his wife, sisters, Rose and Mary, and a brother, Fred.
