Moline, Illinois Charles Stuart Smith, 69, of Moline, died Tuesday, August 7, 2001, in his home. Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at National Cemetery on the Rock Island Arsenal. The Reverend Michael Brewer, Clinton, Iowa, will officiate, and Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is from 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Memorials may be made to Pathway Hospice. Mr. Smith was born December 20, 1931, in Sterling, Illinois, the son of William and Elizabeth (Schick) Smith. He graduated from Bradley University, Peoria, in 1954, and married Dixie Chase on April 24, 1955, in Clinton, Iowa. He served in the U. S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He worked in government service for 38 years, retiring in 1993 as Facilities Management Officer for the U. S. Army Materiel Command Installations and Services Activity on the Rock Island Arsenal. He began his career at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, after serving in the Army. He then worked for the Rock Island District Corps of Engineers, the Ordnance Services and Installations Agency, Headquarters Ordnance Weapons Command, and lastly, the USAMC from which he retired. During his career, he received a number of letters of commendation and was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the Army's second-highest honorary award. He is survived by his wife, Dixie, and a daughter and son-in-law, Kristin and Scott Ladewig of Maryland Heights, Missouri.
