Charlene L. Cook, 68, and Donald P. Cook, 73, of Rock Island, Illinois, formerly of Coal Valley, died Thursday, June 15, 2006, in their home.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley, with The Reverend Tim Snart officiating. Cremation will follow the funeral and private burial will be in Coal Valley Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley. Memorials may be made to the church.
The former Charlene Lorraine Miller was born July 22, 1937, in Marshalltown, Iowa, the daughter of Charles W. and Nellie (Russell) Miller. Donald Paul Cook was born December 25, 1932, in Coal Valley, the son of Lewis T. and Frances (Branberg) Cook. They were married on April 2, 1955, in Coal Valley.
Charlene was a homemaker and had enjoyed working at the Coal Valley Library. Don was a serviceman for the Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric company for 36 years, retiring in 1995, and also worked at J. C. Penney for 5 years. The couple were active members of First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley, where Charlene had been Church Treasurer and taught Sunday school, and where Don was an Elder and Clerk of the Session. Don served as Coal Valley Township Clerk. Charlene enjoyed sewing, golf, cooking, baking and gardening, and was proud of raising her family. Don enjoyed golf, fishing, antique collecting and refinishing, and was known as the local appliance repairman for his Coal Valley friends for many years.
The couple is survived by six children and their spouses, Cary and Dawn Cook of Woodstock, Illinois, Kelly and Teena Cook of Moline, Dawn and Mark Thompson of Blue Grass, Iowa, Debbie and Dave Estell of Moline, Kevin Cook of Savannah, Georgia, and Kimberly Cook of Moline; fifteen grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a special friend of the family, Al Wilson of Moline. Charlene is also survived by siblings and their spouses, Norma and Russ Collins of Des Moines, LuVerna Greene of East Moline, Everett and Pat Miller of Geneseo, and Harold and June Miller of Prophetstown, Illinois. Don is also survived by siblings and spouses, Mary and Elmer Johnson of Orion, Lois Leif of Lynn Center, Raymond Cook of Milan, Rosalie Neppl of Moline, Marvin and Kathy Cook of Urbana, Iowa, and Audrey Cook of Orion. Charlene was preceded in death by a brother, Carroll Miller, and a sister, Iola Linville. Don was preceded in death by a brother, William Cook.
