Carl Gilbert, 89, of Moline, Illinois, died Saturday, December 2, 2017, at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley, with The Rev. Tim Snart officiating. Visitation is 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial is in Coal Valley Cemetery. Trimble Funeral Home, Coal Valley, is assisting the family.
Carl was born November 1, 1928, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Raymond and edna (Hodson) Gilbert. He married Margaret Louise Ritchie on March 19, 1961, in Morrison, Illinois. She died March 7, 2014.
He was a journeyman machinist on the Rock Island Arsenal for over 30 years. He was an entrepreneur or farmed in his earlier years, and at different points owned and operated a hotel, tavern, and multiple rental properties. Along with his family, his passion was his three airplanes: two Cessnas and a Piper Cub, hunting, and motorcycles. He was a also a volunteer firefighter on Campbell's Island for 20 years.
Carl is survived by his daughter, Carla Belgarde of Moline, and a brother, Leonard (Shirley) Gilbert of California. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, and a son-in-law, Joseph Belgarde.
