Lawrence C. Smola, 91, of East Moline, Illinois, formerly of Davenport, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 13, 2011, in Bickford Cottage of Moline.
Services are 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Visitation is one hour prior to services. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery, where the American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Memorials may be to Bickford Cottage for the activity fund.
Lawrence Clarence Smola was born November 26, 1919, in Maquoketa, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Edna Mahulda (Grant) Smola. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, receiving three Bronze Battle Stars and achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. He married Dorothy Jean Verre on June 27, 1964. She died July 13, 2010.
He worked on the Rock Island Arsenal for over 30 years. He was a former member of First Baptist Church in Davenport, and an active member of the NRA. Larry and his wife enjoyed dancing, especially at Timmerman?s in Dubuque, Iowa, and traveling in their various motor homes and boats, especially to Branson, Missouri. He also enjoyed playing golf.
Larry is survived by step sons, Jeffrey and Dennis Verre; step-grandchildren, Shaleen and Ben Sorgen, Justus Verre, Melissa and Jesse Hudson and their children, Makayla and Gregor, Jessica and David Brier, Michael Verre, and Spencer Verre; and a niece, Barbara Denahey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, and sisters, Margaret Morehead and Nadean Hermann.
The family would like to give special thanks to all who took such good care of Larry over the years, especially Michelle Johnson and Pam Willet, and the staff at Bickford Cottage and Genesis Medical Center.
