Lillie Thornton, 95, of Moline, Illinois, died Sunday, May 3, 2009, in Illini Restorative Care Center, Silvis.
Services are 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Visitation is one hour prior to services. Burial is in Nebo Cemetery, Nebo, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
The former Lillie Belle Jacobs was born February 17, 1914, in Lewis County, Missouri, the daughter of Allen and Ella (Covey) Jacobs. She married Kenneth Thornton on August 10, 1933, in Pittsfield, Illinois. He died in 1980.
Lillie received her Masters Degree in Education from Western Illinois University. She was a teacher in various Illinois towns for over 35 years, retiring in 1979 after 13 years teaching fourth grade at Franklin School in Moline.
She was a former member of First Congregational Church in Moline and the Eastern Star, was a member and served as president of ACE (Association of Childhood Education), and was active in numerous educational organizations. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and puzzles.
Lillie is survived by a son, Kenneth (Susan) Thornton of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, daughters, Gail (Deve) Brunson of McMurray, Pennsylvania, and Karen (Tom) Stontz of Rock Island, Illinois, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sisters, Nellie Howes and Goldie Hoover, brothers, Jesse Jacobs, H. Lee Jacobs, William Jacobs, and Charles Jacobs, and a grandson, Dwaine Thornton.
