Mary Alice Vanvooren

Mary Alice VanVooren, 91, formerly of Coal Valley, Illinois, died Tuesday, July 15, 2014, in Iowa Masonic Health Facility, Bettendorf, Iowa.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church Coal Valley, with The Reverend Tim Snart officiating. Burial is in Coal Valley Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Coal Valley, where Rose Chapter OES will conduct Eastern Star services at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the church.

The former Mary Alice Woolley was born July 10, 1923, in Coal Valley, to Melvin and Irene Peters Woolley, and was proud to be a coal miner's daughter. She married Earling Foss on January 1, 1940, in Unionville, Missouri, and they divorced in 1960. She married Henry VanVooren on March 18, 1961, in East Moline, and he died January 23, 1993. She married John H. Hawotte on December 14, 1996, in Coal Valley, and he died April 22, 2004. She was a bus driver for Dan-a-Way Bus Company for nine years, and had also been a radio dispatcher for Cox Cable and manager of the Nuts and Bolts Discount Store in Rock Island.

Mary Alice was a member and former deacon of First Presbyterian Church, Coal Valley; member and past district president of Rebekah Lodge in Kewanee, Illinois; member and Past Worthy Matron of Rose Chapter, Order of Eastern Star; and Member and past district president of Royal Neighbors of America Camp 102. She enjoyed crocheting, plastic canvas needlepoint, and camping.

Mary Alice is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael Sr. and Joann Foss of Colona, Illinois; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Melvin Woolley of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Leroy and Jean Woolley of Colona, and Robert and Patricia Woolley of Muscatine, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husbands; sons, James Foss, Richard Foss, and John Foss, Sr.; and brother, Wayne Woolley.
