The former Floy Ann Kensinger was born January 7, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Merle and Trudie Warner Kensinger. Her family moved to Tama, Iowa, in her early years, and she attended Tama schools, graduating in 1950. She was involved in many high school activities, and continued these as she attended the University of Iowa from 1950 to 1953, where she was an Iowa Cheerleader and a member of the Scottish Highlanders, and where she became a proud Iowa Hawkeye. Her husband and son were Iowa basketball lettermen, and her daughter was an Iowa cheerleader.

She left school after her junior year to marry Herbert C. Thompson on June 14, 1953 in Tama. She spent two years as a U. S. Air Force wife, followed by 22 years being a high school basketball coach's wife. Ann was an at-home mother until 1972, when, at the age of 40, she received her Bachelor's Degree and Teacher's Certificate from Marycrest College. She taught first grade at Lincoln-Irving School in Moline for 20 years, retiring in 1992. She was a member of First Congregational Church, Chapter KT of P.E.O. Sisterhood, Jane Adams Circle of King's Daughters, and Blackhawk Retired Teachers Association.

Ann is survived by her husband of 61 years, Herb; four children and their spouses, Scott and Rebecca Thompson of Gainesville, Florida, Mark and Gail Thompson of Moline, Laura Hamilton of Tucson, Arizona, and Suzanne and Ron Strauss of Plymouth, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Clyde Heddiger of Craig, Colorado.
