Merle E. Casel, Sr., 71, of Moline, Illinois, died Sunday, March 2, 2008, in Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island, Illinois.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Burial is in Rock Island National Cemetery on Arsenal Island where Moline American Legion Post #246 will present military honors. Visitation is one hour before the services. Memorials may be made to the Epilepsy Foundation or the American Cancer Society.

Merle Eugene Casel was born August 6, 1936, in Moline, the son of Melvin J. and Elsie (Johnson) Casel. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1954 to 1957, and married Linda Hawotte on May 9, 1956, in Moline. He served as an officer with the Moline Police Department for 10 years, retiring on disability in 1972. He never missed a Chicago Cubs game, and in earlier years was president and coach for Moline Little League.

Merle is survived by his wife, Linda; three children, Merle E. Casel Jr. and his wife, Florence, Michael J. Casel, and Lindsey Casel, all of Moline; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Casel.
